Abstract

This investigation aims to study the effect of Gaberoun lake water on the microstructure, impact energy and hardness of 1035 carbon steel. The applications of AISI 1035 include machinery parts where toughness and hardness are requisites. The cooling performance of Gaberoun lake water as a quenchant was evaluated against two other quenchants (Mediterranean seawater and Natural water). The results revealed that the hardness is maximised by the highest quenching severity, which produces a high-volume fraction of tempered martensite when Gaberoun lake water is used. The lowest quenching severity was observed when natural water was employed as the quenchant, resulting in a mixed microstructure containing a significant amount of the ductile ferrite phase. The study confirms the inverse relationship between hardness and toughness properties, emphasising the importance of selecting a heat treatment process that strikes a balance between the said properties for the intended applications.
