Body Image Avoidance as a Mediating Variable in the Relationship between Psychological Defeat and Self-Esteem among University Students ((A Descriptive-Correlational Field Study at the University of Benghazi))

Abstract

The present research aimed to investigate the mediating role of "Body Image Avoidance" in the relationship between "Psychological Defeat" and "Self-Esteem" among female students at the University of Benghazi. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach, specifically utilizing correlational methods and path analysis. The sample consisted of a purposive group of (66) obese female students from the Garyounis campus, a selection designed to observe the variables at the peak of their psychological and behavioral manifestation. Three psychometrically standardized scales were administered to measure: Psychological Defeat, Body Image Avoidance, and Self-Esteem.

The results revealed a significant negative correlation between psychological defeat and self-esteem, alongside a robust positive correlation between psychological defeat and body image avoidance. Path analysis confirmed the efficacy of the proposed mediation model, demonstrating that psychological defeat does not merely undermine self-esteem directly; rather, it operates through a "sequential mechanical path." In this process, body image avoidance serves as the central link that transforms feelings of defeat into "physical resignation" and withdrawal behaviors, ultimately leading to the erosion of self-worth.

The research concluded that psychological defeat acts as a "destructive tool" for the psychological persona, while avoidance behavior represents a "cognitive trap" that perpetuates inferiority and obstructs social success. The study recommends the design of specialized counseling programs targeting the deconstruction of "avoidance behavior" as a primary entry point for restoring self-esteem and addressing the root causes of psychological defeat, rather than relying on conventional superficial interventions.
