This study evaluates the potential of regenerative heat recovery to mitigate the efficiency and fuel-consumption penalties associated with high ambient temperatures in a GT13DM gas turbine operating at the Southern Tripoli Power Plant in Libya. Steady-state thermodynamic models of simple and regenerative Brayton cycles were developed in Engineering Equation Solver (EES) utilizing temperature-dependent properties, realistic component irreversibilities, and industrial pressure-loss assumptions. The analysis quantifies the influence of seasonal climatic variations and regenerator effectiveness on net power output, thermal efficiency, and specific fuel consumption. Annualized performance assessments weighted by local meteorological occurrence frequencies reveal that elevated ambient temperatures reduce net power output by 18.54% between the winter reference condition (16.21 °C) and the summer extreme condition (39.40 °C), regeneration significantly improves thermal efficiency and fuel utilization. The regenerative configuration increased annualized thermal efficiency by 3.82 percentage points (13.55% relative improvement) and reduced specific fuel consumption by 11.95%. Furthermore, the retrofit reduces annual fuel consumption by approximately 27.51 million kg and CO₂ emissions by approximately 75,381 tons. These findings support the thermodynamic feasibility of integrating regenerators into existing gas turbine infrastructure in hot-climate regions.
