Causes of Academic Underachievement from the Perspective of Teachers Among A Sample of Primary School Students in the City of Suluq

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the causes of academic underachievement (school-related factors, psychological factors, cognitive factors, physical factors, and family and social factors) among first-grade primary school students from the teachers' perspective. The study employed a descriptive-analytical method, and data were collected using an academic underachievement scale applied to a sample of 50 teachers from primary schools in Suluq area. The results showed that the overall mean score of the study was 1.53 with a standard deviation of 0.50, indicating strong agreement on the role of the studied factors in academic underachievement. School-related factors ranked first with a mean score of 2.00 and a standard deviation of 0.50, highlighting the critical role of the school environment in determining student progress. Family and social factors ranked second with a mean score of 1.20 and a standard deviation of 0.40, cognitive factors ranked third with a mean score of 1.37 and a standard deviation of 0.34, psychological factors ranked fourth with a mean score of 1.22 and a standard deviation of 0.42, and physical factors ranked fifth with a mean score of 1.46 and a standard deviation of 0.50.
