The evolution of the Mediterranean valleys is still ambiguous and those studies which have been carried out do not covered all time periods. This study was completed in an effort to clarify and expand upon the existing literature dealing with the evolution of the Mediterranean valleys generally and more specifically that of the Gebel Al Akhdar area, north-eastern Libya. Thus, an exploration of the evolution stages of the Gebel valleys was undertaken with the main aim of extending the understanding of these stages though a reconstruction of the evolution of the Gebel Al Akhdar valleys. Two research techniques were used to gain a better understanding of the Gebel valleys responses to climate changes. This study concludes that evolution of the Gebel Al Akhdar valleys has undergone different stages, throughout which different geomorphic processes have acted. One of the distinctive stages was the valley filling era. It is probable that this era occured many times previously throughout the long history of the Gebel valleys, but the evidence, in the form of slope and sediments, has probably been eroded.
To achieve the aim of studying the evolution of the valleys in the region, the study will attempt to answer the following questions:
What are the possible impacts of the most recent Pleistocene-Holocene climatic changes on the valley drainage subsystems, and how were these impacts transmitted through the fluvial system to affect the depositional forms?
How can differences in the characteristics of gravel deposits aid in understanding past climatic and hydrological regimes and do sediment size and sorting point to different modes of environmental change?
