Abstract

This study aimed to identify the role of universities in developing the values of citizenship among their students, and to know the most prominent values of priority for them, and to reveal the most important obstacles that may hinder the role of the university in developing the values of belonging and citizenship among its students. To achieve these goals, the researchers used the descriptive analytical approach, and a random sample of 150 students was selected from the College of Education Yafran "Zintan University", and a "questionnaire form" was applied as a tool for collecting field data. The study concluded that the values of national belonging are among the most prominent values of citizenship among students, and that the university has a major role in developing their citizenship values through the development of freedom of expression and a culture of positive dialogue. and cultural values among their students, which has a great impact in enhancing the values of citizenship and belonging to them, and that student activities within the university would contribute to strengthening students’ positive attitudes towards volunteer work and directing them towards attention to community issues and concerns. It was also found that there are many obstacles and challenges that the university may encounter in playing its role in developing the values of citizenship, including the inability to find appropriate scheduling for the subjects of belonging and citizenship within the academic programs, the large burdens of faculty members, overcrowding of students’ courses and their focus on specialization, In addition to the lack of laws obligating students and faculty members to participate in national activities programmer.
